Earthing and Grounding: Benefits for Calm, Sleep and Reconnection

Earthing, also known as grounding, is a simple practice that brings calm and supports sleep, nervous system regulation, and a deeper sense of connection to nature. In this article, I share my personal journey into earthing, the benefits I’ve experienced, and simple ways to begin.

Reconnecting to the Earth: My Journey into Earthing

There was a time when I didn’t realise how disconnected I had become.

Disconnected from my body. From stillness. From the quiet intelligence of nature.

Like so many of us, I was living fast, holding tension in places I didn’t even know existed, constantly “on.” Even when I slowed down, something in me still felt ungrounded, wired, and heightened.

It wasn’t until I discovered earthing that something truly shifted.

What Is Earthing?

Earthing, also known as grounding, is the simple practice of connecting your body directly to the Earth’s natural energy, most commonly by walking barefoot on grass, soil, sand, or stone.

It sounds almost too simple to matter, but sometimes the simplest things are the most profound.

Clint Ober, one of the pioneers of the earthing movement, explains it like this:

“The Earth carries a subtle negative charge, rich in free electrons. When we make direct contact with it, these electrons can flow into the body, helping to neutralise free radicals and reduce inflammation.”

From a scientific perspective, this connection may support:

  • Reduced inflammation
  • Improved sleep
  • Calmer nervous system regulation
  • Better circulation

But beyond science, there’s something deeper that’s felt. We are electrical beings and, just like an electrical product in your home, we need to earth. Without an earth cable, electrical items overheat and stop working. It can feel as though something similar is happening to so many of us, too.

My Personal Journey into Earthing

It was Lockdown 2021, and like many of us, life shifted overnight. I found myself stepping into my family business, a garden centre where I had grown up as a child, surrounded by plants, compost, and seeds.

One day, I was planting a batch of perennials into pots. The smell of the earth was rich, alive, almost intoxicating. As I worked, I heard a quiet voice in my mind:

“Get in the earth.”

I laughed it off.

But there was something about the compost in my hands. It felt so good, so familiar. I looked down at my feet, trapped in trainers in the heat of the greenhouse, and I suddenly needed to take them off.

So I did.

The moment my bare feet touched the ground, I felt a deep exhale move through me. A sigh I didn’t know I’d been holding.

The next day, the voice came back.

And the next.

“I couldn’t get it out of my head… I was being called to get into the earth.”

At one point, I even had the idea to climb into one of the huge commercial compost bags. But then something else came to me, something more instinctive.

One evening at home, I took a shovel into the garden. Under my favourite tree, I dug a shallow pit in the soil. Wearing just a vest and pants, I lay down into the earth and began covering myself completely.

And then I stayed.

Long enough for light to turn into darkness.

What followed was something I can only describe as deeply transformative.

My body began to respond in waves: shaking, deep breaths, tears. Moments of intense release were followed by states of pure, almost overwhelming bliss. Then cold. Then shaking again.

Over and over, like my body was processing something ancient.

Until eventually, it was done.

When I sat up, I felt different.

Clearer. Lighter. Rebalanced.

Almost as if I had been reborn.

That moment marked the beginning of what I can only call an earthing obsession. I needed to understand what had happened, why I had been called to it, and why my body had responded so powerfully.

So I began researching, and it honestly changed my life.

Why We Need the Benefits of Earthing More Than Ever

In today’s world, we are constantly insulated.

  • Rubber-soled shoes
  • Raised insulated buildings
  • Screens
  • Stress

We are living above the Earth rather than with it. We have become disconnected.

Our nervous systems are overstimulated, our bodies inflamed, and our minds rarely rest.

Earthing offers a return, a remembering, and a reconnection to something ancient and deeply regulating.

It’s not just about standing barefoot - it’s about coming home to yourself.

Hormonal balance. Vagus nerve activation. Homeostasis for the body, the mind, and the spirit.

The Emotional & Energetic Shift

When you ground regularly, something subtle begins to change.

You may notice:

  • A sense of calm arriving more easily
  • Less reactivity and more presence
  • A deeper connection to your body
  • A feeling of being held, supported, and steadied

It’s as if the Earth gently says:

“You don’t have to hold it all alone.”

For many of us on healing or spiritual paths, this grounding is essential. It creates the foundation that allows everything else to integrate.

Making Earthing Accessible for Everyone

While walking barefoot outdoors is the most natural way to ground, it’s not always accessible for everyone.

Whether due to mobility challenges, health conditions, weather, or lifestyle, not everyone can spend time outside in direct contact with the Earth daily, and that’s okay.

This is where modern earthing tools can beautifully support the practice.

At Tru Nature Wellness, we offer earthing products designed to bring that connection indoors, including:

  • Earthing yoga mats
  • Grounding mats for relaxation or workspaces
  • Earthing bed sheets to support rest and recovery while you sleep

These tools are especially supportive for:

  • Older adults
  • Those with limited mobility
  • People recovering from illness or injury
  • Anyone living in urban environments

They allow you to receive the benefits of grounding while resting, sleeping, or simply being. It’s about meeting yourself where you are, without pressure.

A Simple Practice to Begin

If you’re new to earthing, start here:

  • Step outside barefoot for 5–10 minutes
  • Don’t worry about perfect weather — cool air, damp grass, or even crisp mornings can enhance the experience
  • Stand, walk, or sit on natural ground
  • Bring your awareness to your breath
  • Feel the contact between your body and the Earth

No forcing. No expectations. Just presence.

A Return to Simplicity

Earthing reminds us that healing doesn’t always have to be complex. Sometimes it’s as simple as:

Feet on the ground. Breath in the body. Awareness in the present moment.

From there, everything begins to soften.

Closing

This practice has become a quiet but powerful part of my life and my work.

It underpins the way I hold space, the way I regulate, and the way I reconnect when I feel overwhelmed.

So if you feel the call - even just a gentle curiosity - I invite you to try it, because the Earth is always there, in every season, in every temperature, patiently waiting to support you.
